20 Year Summit Challenge
The Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter Trust has been around for 20 years, and is celebrating this milestone with a 20 Summit Challenge. We are very proud to have been a part of the Trust right from the start with Rob Williams, WHK Principal, being the trust's chairman since its inception in May 1991.
Over this period the service has grown from a semi-dedicated rescue helicopter, which with best endeavours could be airborne within 30 minutes, to today where they respond to over 300 missions annually - in the air within ten minutes, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
As part of our ongoing support we got right behind the 20 Summit Challenge and sponsored the first event that kicked off the series.
On Sunday 22 May we joined the Nelson community together with Nathan Fa'avae, Nelson Mayor Aldo Miccio and the Tasman Makos for the walk up Centre of New Zealand. It was a wonderful sight to see so many people showing their support on the day.
The 20 Summit Challenge is open to all fitness levels and age groups. You can either join the scheduled climbs, or do the challenge in your own time. You have until the end of 2011 to complete the challenge. For more information visit www.20summits.co.nz.
Purple Cake Day - 1 March 2011
On 1 March we celebrated Purple Cake Day with the rest of New Zealand to help the children of Haiti - a country devastated by a severe earthquake on 12 January 2010, while already existing in extreme poverty. Purple Cake Day is an idea conceived by Nelsonian, Emily Sanson-Rejouis to celebrate the spirit of her two daughters who were lost with their father in the Haiti earthquake.
Our whole team got involved through a number of purple initiatives that included selling purple cupcakes for morning and afternoon tea and raffle tickets for a giant purple cupcake.
Part of the funds raised across the country was also donated to support the children in need in Canterbury.
